Pro-Democracy Hong Kong Lawmakers Resign

Newsnow Desk: All of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy politicians have resigned from the city’s legislature on Wednesday, just hours after the city’s government disqualified four opposition legislators on allegations of “endangering national security”.

The expulsion of the four politicians came after China’s parliament adopted a resolution allowing the city’s government to expel legislators deemed to be supporting Hong Kong independence, colluding with foreign forces or threatening national security, without having to go through the courts.

The disqualifications came after China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, which held meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, passed a resolution stating that those who support Hong Kong’s independence or refuse to acknowledge China’s sovereignty over the city, as well as commit acts that threaten national security or ask external forces to interfere in the city’s affairs, should be disqualified.
